Over 300 Pascack Valley students participated in a recent survey on the current political climate at PV. The survey allowed students to express their views on President Donald Trump, the media, and political affiliation.

The first question on the survey asked students to select the political party they affiliate with, such as the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, or if they are Independent. 41 percent of the school said that they are Democrats, 30 percent of the school answered that they are Independent, and 27 percent of the school answered that they are Republican.

Additionally, students responded to Trump’s promises made during the general election. 145 students believe that Trump is not keeping his promises, while 127 students said that he is keeping his promises on some issues.

The issues that were mentioned included immigration, jobs, tax reform, and health care. Trump may have campaigned hard on these issues, but many feel, according to the survey, that he has not necessarily fulfilled many of his campaign promises based on the individuals who answered the survey and his current approval rating at PV.

Although, many students said that the President is acting on tax reform and a health care.

“The stock market is continuously reaching new record highs,” a PV student said. “Trump is reducing regulations on businesses which makes it easier for them to grow. He proposed massive tax cuts and health care reform.”

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump promised to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. In one of his rallies, he mentioned “…We are going to repeal it, we are going to replace it. We have so many unbelievable alternatives.” However, in May, the GOP health care bill passed through the House of Representatives, but in June, it failed to pass in the Senate, so the Affordable Care Act is still in place.

On Dec. 2, the Senate passed the GOP tax plan with a vote of 51-49. Congressional budget scorers say that the legislation will add one trillion dollars to the deficit. Republicans say that the economic growth due to the tax cuts will make up for the difference in tax revenue.

President Trump believes that the tax reform will keep companies from moving overseas. According to CNN, companies that pay high tax rates, including Disney and Verizon and their employees have benefited from the tax cuts as the employees of both companies have recently received bonuses.

Furthermore, 60 percent of students who replied to the survey believe that the media has been unfair to Trump. Many people said that the media does not show Trump’s positive actions such as visiting Puerto Rico and Texas following the hurricanes, but rather, the negatives produced by the strong left-wing bias of CNN and MSNBC.

“There is an intense bias in liberal media towards the coverage of the President, stated by a recent poll that CNN and MSNBC have aired,” a student said. “Approximately 90 percent poor media towards our President. Those in charge at these networks and in effect in other media outlets have started a phenomenon of hatred towards Trump, and are creating immense division in our country’s politics by portraying all of his decisions automatically in a bad lens.”
