The Garden State Scholastic Press Association (GSSPA), a non-profit organization that provides scholarships and conferences for high school newspaper publications, has recently tweeted the finalists for the print and online media awards. First, second, and third places for each print category were announced and will be decided at the fall conference held at Rutgers University on Monday, Oct. 29. The Smoke Signal has been selected to win in a multitude of categories along with honorable mentions.

Among other contestants in the print contest, The Smoke Signal is competing to win Overall Excellence, the Distinguished Journalism Award, Newswriting Division B, Feature Writing Division B,  Sports Writing Division B, Opinion Writing Division B, Review Writing Division B, Art/Illustration Division B, and Photography Division B. The Smoke Signal has received all of the finalist positions for In-Depth Reporting Division B.

In regards to the online competition, The Smoke Signal is finalists for Online Overall Excellence, the Online Distinguished Journalism Award, Multimedia Feature, Multimedia News, Student Podcast, and Breaking Sports, and has won all spots in Multimedia Sports and Photo Gallery.

Last year, The Smoke Signal won a total of 34 individual awards and three main publication awards, including the New Jersey Distinguished Online Journalism award, the New Jersey Overall Excellence award for Online Journalism, and the New Jersey Distinguished Journalism award for Division B.
