Administration is optimistic for second year of PARCC testing
About 80 percent of Pascack Valley’s student body last year chose not participate in the new standardized test, PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers), which is affiliated with seven different states. This year, though, only 12 percent are not taking the test, according to PV Principal Tom DeMaio.
PARCC testing day one: Students refusing exam sit “silently” in auditorium
Only 50 of the 166 kids who refused to take the PARCC test sat in the auditorium at Pascack Valley on Thursday for the duration of the test as they were supposed to. Thursday marked the start of the PARCC exams. The first two days, Thursday and Friday, are devoted to math. English will be tested on Monday and Tuesday.
PARCC testing day 2: students refusing to take the test not allowed to use electronics
Students who have refused the PARCC are not allowed to use electronic equipment inside the auditorium, where they are required to stay for the duration of the testing period. This involves all electronics: laptops, phones, iPods, etc.
Why Students did—or didn’t— take the PARCC
Some PV students were asked why or why not they took the PARCC test this week. While they do not speak for the entire student body, these students present opinions that are shared by many. Here is what they said.
NJDOE claims PARCC benefits outweigh drawbacks
There are the SATs and the ACTs. There are AP exams and placement tests. All are standardized, and all are commonplace to many high school students. They can feel long and drawn out, and many think it is painful to sit in a room for so long. But they have their upsides, including, quite obviously, getting into college.
PARCC Day 4: administrators overall pleased with PARCC testing
After four days of testing, the PARCC exam has concluded at Pascack Valley. “We’re happy with how it went,” said John Puccio, the Assistant Principal at Pascack Valley. “There were some new parts this year so we didn’t know what we were going to expect. But we’re pleased with what happened.”
