Many students get home from school feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious.

They have too much on their plate to come home and sit at a desk doing homework for multiple hours. The idea that teenagers should be going to school for eight hours, coming home, and doing work until midnight is not ideal or healthy.

I believe that one of the main causes of stress besides sports and juggling friends and family is the amount of homework students get.

School as a whole can be very overwhelming and stressful, and having to come home and get excessive amounts of homework done in a short period of time is not healthy, mentally or physically.

Personally, I am very stressed due to the amount of homework I receive and I don’t recall a time in my high school career where I have not been.

I know from experience the last thing kids want to do when they get home from a long school day is homework. The amount of homework I get sometimes keeps me up until 2 a.m., especially with work for my more challenging classes.

I find this to be a huge problem.

Lack of sleep can cause stress, irritability, lack of energy, slowed thinking, and mood changes.

I find myself nearly falling asleep in my classes when I stay up late to do work. As well, I don’t focus on the lessons that are being taught and I’m easily annoyed or moody.

Sleep deprivation can also cause grades to drop, which is ironic especially if the students are not getting enough sleep because of their school work.

Personally, I haven’t seen my grades drop from not getting enough sleep, but I understand that many of my peers have.

The amount of homework students get is a pressing problem that needs to be sorted out for the sake of students’ mental and physical health.

The only way this issue can be sorted out is for teachers to put an end to assigning an overwhelming amount of homework.
