The NJSIAA released its updated “Return to Play Plan” regarding high school sports, which includes four seasons for the 2020-21 school year. The plan was released Wednesday with dates for the beginnings and ends of the seasons, as well as dates for the beginning of practices and postseasons.

The indoor fall sports – girls volleyball and gymnastics – are being moved to Season 3, which will take place in March and April. If outdoor fall sports are unable to be played in this season, they will also be moved to Season 3.

“The task force is striving to get each sport started as timely as possible; however, minimizing potential overlap and the risk of student-athletes having to choose between seasons is a priority,” the NJSIAA said in its “Return to Play Plan” document. “Therefore, the spring start dates, regular season [dates] and postseason dates may be staggered by sport; however, the task force recognizes the need to maximize the spring season due to the loss of season last school year.”

Season 1 will consist of the outdoor Fall sports, with many sports having different deadlines for the end of the season.
Season 2 will include all of the winter sports, with the regular season being shortened in order to include four seasons in the 2020-21 school year.
The “Return to Play Plan” includes the addition of Season 3, which hosts the indoor Fall sports – girls volleyball and gymnastics

The dates for Season 4 have not been finalized, as there are variables that could affect the season depending on the status of COVID-19.
