On Saturday, the Pascack Valley hockey team will take on Paramus Catholic at Sport-O-Rama at 8 p.m.  However, Saturday’s contest will be about more than just what happens on the ice.

In a joint effort between the hockey team and the Pascack Valley Senior Class Council, the game will also serve as a fundraiser for the ALS Association.

It was Matt Mugno, a member of the hockey team and serves as Vice-President to the senior class council, who had the initial inspiration for the event.

“I think I just found the connection between being on the team and also being a leader on the council,” Mugno said.

There will be a raffle at the game, and all the profits from the raffle will go to the ALS Association. In addition, anyone who brings in a canned food item to the game will receive a free “rally towel”.  The canned goods will be donated to the Helping Hands Food Pantry in Hillsdale.

Mugno and his fellow council member, Sofia Urbaniak, were the lead organizers of the event. They will read a statement about ALS before the game, while Urbaniak will also sing the National Anthem.

“Matt and I are going to introduce the night as a whole, and we are going to talk about why we did it, what the council does, just so everyone has an idea about the event,” Urbaniak said.

Urbaniak has a very personal connection with ALS, as her father was diagnosed with the disease when Urbaniak was in second grade.

The Senior Class Council has been organizing fundraisers for the ALS Association for the past four years.

“Throughout each year, we would pick certain fundraisers, where the money would go to ALS. We did volleyball nights, speedball nights, and trivia nights,” Urbaniak said.

The Senior Class Council also created clothing to sell in support of the ALS Association, as well as participating in a walk every year to support ALS.

Mugno thought that a hockey game would be a “good platform” to raise money and “bring awareness” for the ALS Association.

Mugno came up with the idea for the fundraiser in late December and began planning over the holiday break.

“I asked the council members, and I didn’t know how they would like it, but they really liked the idea,” Mugno said. “From there, we just took it and ran. Over the break, I was in constant contact with [Senior class advisor] Ms. Mathias and the other council members and we really organized it. Just like that, one month goes by and it’s already here.”
