As I took my first steps through the doors of Pascack Valley, I took a pause, thinking to myself, “This is going to be my home for the next four years.”

Now that this school year is coming to an end, I have finally understood what the phrase “time flies when you’re having fun.” Although I have only been at this school for one year, it feels like  have come along way from being a lost and confused freshman to almost a sophomore.

It still shocks me that less than a couple of months ago, I was wandering around the school hallways thinking which staircase would be the quickest route to my next period class. Now, I could walk these halls in my sleep.

Not only have I managed to navigate my ways through the school hallways, but I have also been accustomed to the independence and freedom that has to high school offer. Throughout the year, I have learned to break free from hanging out with only the people from my friend group, and associate with all sorts of different classmates and upperclassmen.

In addition to making new friends, I, along with other freshmen, have had the choice of signing up for all sorts of extracurriculars and clubs. This has not only helped me meet new people, but it has also allowed me to discover new interests that I would still be so passionate about today.

Reminiscing about the beginning of the year, I remembered how worried I was about becoming a little fish in a small pond, especially after being at the top of the social chain in middle school. It did not take me long to realize that I would have to wait to earn the same privileges as most of the upperclassmen have obtained, such as leaving school during lunch, wearing costumes on Halloween, and participating in internships.

Despite the fact that I have wished that I could fast forward to junior or senior year, I have learned just how precious my first year at PV really was. Overall, it taught me that high school was nothing to fear because it has offered me opportunities to make new friends, join different clubs, and gain a sense of independence.

My freshman year experience has made me even more prepared and excited for my next three years.
