Marvel fans and non fans all know the mighty greats of the franchise: Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America. They know of their heroism, their intelligence, their hidden strength and their good morals.

And then there is Deadpool.

The legendary Merc with a Mouth finally gets his cinematic debut and he did not disappoint. It was filled with action, sarcasm, and occasional fourth wall breaking. For a die hard Marvel fan, in short, it is everything we expected. And for those not as familiar, it is great introduction to the character.

Ryan Reynolds, who played the title character, was as phenomenal as every knew he would be. Playing the mighty, loony, and at times just hero of the story was easy as pie for him, because he was able to play the character with all the flamboyancy and cockiness the character deserved. Alongside that, he showed the characters serious moments and moments of actual intelligent thought with ease, sliding between that and the normal Deadpool persona without damaging the authenticity of either side.

I have personally witnessed Morena Baccarin’s work on Firefly as Inara Serra and I have been amazed and I have marveled (no pun intended) at her ability to play the character that is calm, cool, and calculating alongside of having a heart of gold with such ease and poise. So, I was also shocked that she was able to play the polar opposite of that character with such ease as well. Vanessa, her character in the movie, was brazen, quick to jump into things, and tough as nails. She did not take anything from anyone and acted more on instinct that Mrs. Serra, who always considered every outcome before making a move. Her moments of vulnerability also allowed for development for her character and for Deadpool himself, allowing us to see what the Merc in the Mouth would willing go through torture for and later fight for.

The action in this movie is simply everywhere. Every scene seems to contain some sort of fight, skirmish, or misunderstanding, leaving the audience in amazement and suspense during every fight. The comedy also left the audience in stitches as the comedy and action blended together to make something unique.

I caution readers, however, about the movie since it is rated R for a reason. There is strong language, nudity, and very much blood (he is a merc after all) so be warned.

The director, Tim Miller, directed the movie with an incredible understanding of the character and the audience the movie would attract. He easily tells an origin story without going too much into detail and by breaking it up with present dangers and fights that are happening to the character as he is going on his adventure. This is very hard to do and very rare in a director. So Mr. Miller, give yourself a pat on the back.

All in all, the movie was a smash, another amazing home run for Marvel, and I bet any fan, familiar with this character or not, will love this movie.
